Sedation Dentist in Northwich
For patients who need more than reassurance, sedation makes dental treatment genuinely manageable, even for those who have been avoiding the dentist for years.
Overview
Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental treatment, reducing anxiety and making procedures more comfortable for those who would otherwise find them difficult or impossible. At Brunner Court Dental & Implant Practice, 95 Witton Street, Northwich, CW9 5DR, sedation is available for nervous patients, patients undergoing longer or more complex procedures, and patients with a significant dental phobia. Sedation is priced on consultation. The practice is fully private and new patients are welcome. Call 01606 44394 to discuss whether sedation is right for you.
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses carefully administered medication to produce a state of deep calm and relaxation during dental treatment. Depending on the type of sedation used, patients may feel drowsy, deeply relaxed or have little or no memory of the procedure afterwards, while remaining safe and monitored throughout.
Sedation is not the same as general anaesthetic. Under sedation, patients remain conscious, are able to respond to instructions and can breathe independently throughout the procedure. The difference is that the anxiety, the tension and in many cases the perception of time and discomfort are significantly reduced.
For patients who have avoided the dentist for years because of fear, sedation can be genuinely life-changing. It allows treatment that would otherwise be unthinkable to be completed safely and comfortably, often in fewer appointments than would otherwise be needed. And for many patients, having one or two positive experiences under sedation is enough to allow them to return for future appointments without it.
Types of sedation we offer
Inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide)
Also known as happy gas or laughing gas, inhalation sedation uses a blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen delivered through a small nosepiece. It produces a warm, relaxed, slightly floaty feeling within a few minutes. You remain fully conscious and able to communicate throughout, but the edge of anxiety is significantly reduced. The effects wear off quickly once the gas is removed, meaning most patients can drive home and return to normal activities the same day. Inhalation sedation is the mildest form of sedation and is suitable for patients with mild to moderate anxiety, for children and for shorter procedures.
Oral sedation
A sedative medication is taken by tablet before the appointment, producing a moderate level of relaxation by the time treatment begins. Oral sedation produces a deeper level of calm than inhalation sedation and many patients have little memory of the procedure. You will need someone to accompany you to and from the appointment and should not drive for the rest of the day.
Intravenous (IV) sedation
IV sedation is administered directly into the bloodstream through a small needle in the back of the hand, producing a deep state of relaxation very quickly. Patients are conscious but profoundly calm and typically have very little or no memory of the treatment afterwards. It is the most effective option for patients with significant dental phobia, for complex or lengthy procedures, or for patients who have not responded adequately to lighter forms of sedation. IV sedation requires a thorough pre-sedation assessment and you will need a responsible adult to accompany you and remain with you for the rest of the day. Your clinician will recommend the most appropriate type of sedation for your specific situation at your consultation.
Am I a suitable candidate for sedation?
Sedation is suitable for a wide range of patients, but a thorough assessment is always carried out before it is used to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your individual circumstances.
Sedation may be right for you if:
- You have significant dental anxiety or phobia that prevents you from attending routine appointments
- You have had a traumatic dental experience in the past
- You have a strong gag reflex that makes dental treatment difficult
- You are undergoing a lengthy or complex procedure such as multiple extractions, implant surgery or a full smile makeover
- You have a medical condition such as cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s or severe autism that makes cooperation during treatment difficult
- You simply want to be as relaxed as possible during your treatment
We would discuss your circumstances carefully if you:
- Are pregnant: Sedation is generally avoided during pregnancy. Your clinician will advise on the safest approach.
- Have certain medical conditions: Some conditions and medications can affect the suitability of particular sedation types. A full medical history is taken at your pre-sedation assessment.
- Have sleep apnoea: Certain forms of sedation require additional monitoring and precautions for patients with sleep apnoea. Your clinician will assess this carefully.
- Have a very low body weight or are elderly: Dosage and monitoring requirements may differ and will be assessed individually.
What does bone grafting treatment involve?
Consultation and assessment
Your clinician will carry out a full consultation to discuss your anxiety, your dental history and the treatment you need. A thorough medical history is taken to confirm which type of sedation is most appropriate and safe for you. You will leave with a clear written treatment plan and cost breakdown before anything is agreed.
Pre-sedation instructions
Depending on the type of sedation being used, you may receive instructions about fasting beforehand, arranging transport and what to wear on the day. Your clinician will go through these with you clearly at your consultation so you know exactly what to expect.
The sedation appointment
On the day of your appointment, the sedation is administered and its effect assessed before treatment begins. Your clinician will wait until you are fully relaxed and comfortable before any dental work starts. Your vital signs are monitored throughout.
Treatment
With you calm and comfortable, your clinician carries out the planned treatment. Longer or more complex procedures that might otherwise require multiple visits can often be completed in a single sedation appointment, reducing the overall number of times you need to attend.
Recovery
Once treatment is complete, you will be monitored in the practice until the clinical team is satisfied you are safe to leave. For IV and oral sedation, a responsible adult must accompany you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. You should not drive, operate machinery or make important decisions until the following day.
Follow-up
A follow-up appointment is arranged to review your recovery and discuss any further treatment needed. Many patients find that a positive experience under sedation makes future appointments significantly easier, sometimes without sedation at all.

Frequently asked questions about sedation dentistry in Northwich
Brunner Court Dental & Implant Practice, 95 Witton Street, Northwich, CW9 5DR, offers inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide), oral sedation and IV sedation. The most appropriate type is recommended at your consultation based on your level of anxiety, your medical history and the treatment being carried out. Call 01606 44394 to discuss your options with the team.
No. Sedation is not the same as general anaesthetic. Under sedation you remain conscious, aware and able to respond to instructions throughout the procedure. The difference is that anxiety, discomfort and in many cases the perception of time are significantly reduced. Many patients have little or no memory of the procedure afterwards, particularly with IV sedation, but they are not unconscious at any point.
Not after oral or IV sedation. Both types require a responsible adult to accompany you to and from the appointment and remain with you for the rest of the day. You should not drive, operate machinery or make important decisions until the following day. Inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide) wears off quickly once the gas is removed and most patients are able to drive home after this type of sedation, though your clinician will confirm this at your appointment.
Yes, when carried out by trained and experienced clinicians in an appropriate clinical environment. At Brunner Court, a full medical history and pre-sedation assessment are carried out before any sedation is administered, and your vital signs are monitored throughout the procedure. The vast majority of patients tolerate sedation very well. Your clinician will discuss any specific risks relevant to your individual circumstances at your consultation.
Sedation can be used alongside most dental treatments at Brunner Court, including examinations, fillings, extractions, implant surgery, root canal treatment and cosmetic work. It is particularly useful for longer or more complex procedures where multiple treatments can be combined into a single appointment, reducing the overall number of visits needed. Your clinician will confirm at consultation which type of sedation is appropriate for the specific treatment being planned.
