What are implant retained dentures?
Implant retained dentures are a significant step up from conventional removable dentures. Instead of resting on the gum surface and relying on suction or adhesive to stay in place, they are anchored securely to a small number of dental implants placed into the jawbone.
The denture clips onto the implants and locks firmly in position. It can still be removed for cleaning, unlike a fully fixed arch restoration but during the day it stays exactly where it should be. No shifting while eating. No movement while speaking. No reaching for the adhesive every morning.

Stability
A conventional denture relies on suction and the shape of the gum ridge to stay in place. As bone resorbs over time the fit changes, stability reduces and adhesives become necessary. An implant retained denture is anchored directly to implants in the jawbone, it does not move and does not rely on the gum surface for support.
Bone preservation
When teeth are lost, the jawbone beneath them gradually resorbs because there is no longer a root stimulating it. A conventional denture does nothing to prevent this. The implants supporting an implant retained denture stimulate the bone in the same way natural tooth roots do, slowing or preventing further bone loss.
Comfort
Conventional dentures can cause soreness and pressure points on the gum tissue, particularly as the fit changes over time. Implant retained dentures distribute the load through the implants rather than the gums, significantly reducing discomfort for most patients.

- Have diabetes or other systemic conditions: Well-managed conditions are generally not a barrier. We will review your medical history carefully before treatment is planned.
- Take bisphosphonates or other medications: Certain medications require careful consideration before implant treatment. Your clinician will review your full medication history at consultation and advise accordingly.

What does implant retained denture treatment involve?

Your first appointment is free of charge. Dr Nikhil will carry out a thorough clinical assessment, examine your current denture and gum tissue, review your dental and medical history and discuss your goals. You will leave with a clear written treatment plan and full cost breakdown with no obligation to proceed.
Treatment planning and scanning
X-rays and in some cases a CBCT scan are taken in-house to assess bone volume and plan the precise positioning of the implants. This ensures the implants are placed in the optimal position to support the denture effectively.
Preparatory treatment (if required)
Where bone volume is insufficient to support implants without preparatory work, bone grafting is carried out first and allowed to heal before implant placement proceeds. Your treatment plan will confirm whether this applies to your case.
Implant placement
Two to four implants are placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. The number required depends on which arch is being treated and your individual bone structure. Sedation is available for patients who are anxious. Placement typically takes between one and two hours.
Healing
The implants are left to integrate with the surrounding bone over several weeks. During this time you will continue to wear a temporary denture so you are never without teeth.
Fitting the retained denture
Once healing is confirmed, the denture is modified or remade to incorporate the attachments that clip onto the implants. Your clinician will check the fit, stability and bite carefully and make any adjustments needed before you leave.
Aftercare
The denture is removed for cleaning each day. The implants themselves are cleaned around with a soft brush and specialist interdental tools. Regular hygiene appointments at the practice keep everything in good condition for the long term.
