Dental Retainers in Northwich
Retainers are the step that protects everything orthodontic treatment has achieved. Without them, teeth move back. It is as simple as that.
Overview
Dental retainers are appliances worn after orthodontic treatment to hold the teeth in their new positions and prevent them from drifting back towards their original alignment. At Brunner Court Dental & Implant Practice, 95 Witton Street, Northwich, CW9 5DR, fixed retainers are available from £150 per arch and Vivera removable retainers from £400 for three dual-arch sets. Retainers are provided for patients who have completed Invisalign, Six Month Smiles, Angel Aligners or any other orthodontic treatment, whether at Brunner Court or elsewhere. The practice is fully private and new patients are welcome. Call 01606 44394 or book online.
Why retainers matter
Teeth are held in their positions by the bone and fibres surrounding each root. When orthodontic treatment moves teeth into new positions, those surrounding tissues need time to remodel and stabilise around the new positions. Until that remodelling is fully complete, and even to some degree afterwards, the teeth have a natural tendency to drift back.
This is not a failure of the orthodontic treatment. It is simply how teeth behave when the force that was moving them is removed. Every patient who completes any form of orthodontic treatment, whether traditional braces, Invisalign, Six Month Smiles or any other system, needs retainers to maintain the result.
The good news is that retainers are straightforward. You wear them as directed, look after them properly and your result is protected. Skip them and even a well-achieved orthodontic outcome will gradually undo itself over time.
Types of retainer we offer
Fixed retainers
A thin, custom-made wire is bonded to the back surfaces of the front teeth, holding them in position without any action required from the patient. Fixed retainers are invisible from the front, always in place and do not rely on the patient remembering to wear them. They are particularly well suited to patients who are concerned about compliance with a removable retainer or whose teeth were significantly moved during treatment.
Fixed retainers require slightly more careful cleaning, an interdental brush or floss threader is used to clean beneath the wire — and should be checked at regular hygiene and check-up appointments to ensure the bond remains secure.
From £150 per arch
Vivera removable retainers
Vivera retainers are custom-made clear retainers produced by Invisalign, worn over the teeth at night. They are supplied in sets of three dual-arch retainers, giving patients a long-lasting supply of replacement retainers as the first and second sets naturally wear over time.
Vivera retainers are an ideal option for patients who have completed Invisalign treatment and are already familiar with wearing aligners at night. They are also available for patients who have completed other orthodontic treatments and want a comfortable, discreet removable retainer.
From £400 for three dual-arch sets
Standard removable retainers
Where Vivera retainers are not required, a standard custom-made removable retainer can be provided. These are made from impressions or a digital scan of the teeth and worn at night to maintain tooth positions.

The combined approach
Many patients choose to have both a fixed retainer bonded immediately after treatment and a removable retainer for night wear. This provides the greatest level of protection, the fixed retainer holds the teeth in place throughout the day and night, while the removable retainer provides additional support and serves as a backup if the fixed retainer ever needs repair or replacement.
Am I suitable for a retainer at Brunner Court?
Retainers at Brunner Court are available for patients who have completed orthodontic treatment here or elsewhere.
Retainers may be right for you if:
- You have recently completed Invisalign, Six Month Smiles, Angel Aligners or any fixed brace treatment
- You had orthodontic treatment in the past and have noticed your teeth shifting
- Your existing retainer has broken, worn out or been lost and needs replacing
- You have never had a retainer fitted after previous orthodontic treatment and want to prevent further drift
A few things to note:
- If your teeth have already moved significantly: Where noticeable drift has occurred since orthodontic treatment was completed, a retainer alone will not move them back. A new course of treatment may be needed to re-align the teeth before a retainer is fitted. Your clinician will assess this at consultation.
- If your existing retainer no longer fits: A retainer that no longer fits should not be forced onto the teeth. Book an appointment so your clinician can assess whether a replacement can be made from your existing records or whether new records are needed.
What does getting a retainer involve?
For patients completing orthodontic treatment at Brunner Court: Your retainer appointment is arranged at the end of your active treatment. Impressions or a digital scan are taken, your retainer is fabricated and fitted at a subsequent appointment, and your clinician shows you exactly how to use and care for it.
For fixed retainers, the wire is bonded to the back of the relevant teeth at the same appointment that the orthodontic brackets are removed or the final aligner is checked off.
For patients coming from elsewhere: If you have completed orthodontic treatment at another practice or if your existing retainer needs replacing, a new patient appointment is all that is needed. Your clinician will examine your teeth, take impressions or a scan and arrange your retainer. A brief examination fee applies.
Assessment
Your clinician examines the current position of your teeth and confirms the most appropriate retainer type for your situation.
Records
Impressions or a digital scan are taken to produce a precise fit for your retainer.
Fabrication
Your retainer is produced in the dental laboratory and returned to the practice within a few days.
Fitting
Your retainer is fitted and checked for comfort. Your clinician shows you how to insert and remove it, how to clean it and how often to wear it.
Ongoing care
We recommend bringing your retainer to your regular check-up appointments so your clinician can monitor its condition and the stability of your teeth over time.

Retainer wear is lifelong if you want to maintain the result of your orthodontic treatment. In the first months after treatment is complete, retainers are typically worn every night. Over time, some patients are able to reduce the frequency of wear to a few nights per week while maintaining stable tooth positions. Your clinician will advise on the appropriate wearing schedule for your specific situation at your fitting appointment.
Without consistent retainer wear, teeth gradually drift back towards their original positions. The speed of drift varies between patients but it is inevitable over time. If you have stopped wearing your retainer, book an appointment as soon as possible. If drift has already occurred, your clinician will assess whether a new retainer can hold the current position or whether a further course of orthodontic treatment is needed to realign the teeth before a retainer is fitted.
Do not try to force a retainer that no longer fits onto your teeth. Book an appointment at Brunner Court as soon as possible. Your clinician will assess the current position of your teeth and arrange a replacement retainer from new impressions or a scan. The sooner you act, the less likely it is that significant drift will have occurred.
Yes. Brunner Court provides replacement and new retainers for patients who completed orthodontic treatment at another practice. A brief examination and new impressions or a digital scan are all that is needed. Call 01606 44394 to arrange an appointment.
