What counts as a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is anything that causes significant pain, has left you unable to eat or speak comfortably, or involves damage that needs prompt attention to prevent the situation from getting worse.
If you are unsure whether your situation counts, call us anyway. Our team will talk it through with you on the phone and advise on the fastest way to get you seen.
Common dental emergencies we see:
- Severe toothache or dental pain that is not settling
- A tooth that has been knocked out, loosened or pushed out of position
- A broken, cracked or fractured tooth
- A crown, bridge or veneer that has come off
- A lost or broken filling
- A dental abscess or swelling around a tooth or gum
- A broken denture or orthodontic appliance causing pain or injury
- Bleeding from the mouth that is not stopping
What to do in a dental emergency
- If you are in pain or have suffered a dental injury, call us first: Call 01606 44394 as early in the day as possible. The earlier we hear from you, the better our chances of seeing you the same day. Do not wait and hope it improves on its own.
- If a tooth has been knocked out: Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it very briefly with milk or clean water. Do not scrub it. Place it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in a small container of milk, and call us immediately. Time matters significantly with a knocked-out tooth.
- If you have a dental abscess: An abscess is a bacterial infection and it will not clear up without treatment. It can spread if left untreated. Call us straight away. If the swelling is affecting your eye, jaw or throat, or you have difficulty swallowing or breathing, go to your nearest A&E immediately.
- If a crown or filling has come out: You are unlikely to be in danger, but the tooth underneath will be exposed and sensitive. Avoid very hot, cold or sweet food and drink on that side. Call us to arrange an appointment.
- If you are in pain outside our opening hours: Call 01606 44394 and follow the instructions. Out-of-hours cover is available for dental emergencies at £145.
Am I able to be seen as a new patient?
Yes. Brunner Court welcomes new emergency patients, not just existing ones. If you are in pain and have not been to us before, call 01606 44394 and we will do everything we can to get you seen as quickly as possible.
New patient emergency appointments are £65. If you decide to register with us for ongoing care after your emergency appointment, we will talk through your options at that visit.
What happens at an emergency appointment?
Call us
Call 01606 44394 as early as possible. Our team will take a brief description of what has happened and book you in as quickly as we can. For out-of-hours emergencies, call the same number and follow the instructions.
Your emergency appointment
When you arrive, your clinician will carry out a thorough examination of the affected area, take any x-rays needed and identify the cause of the problem. The priority at this appointment is to relieve your pain and stabilise the situation.
Immediate treatment
Depending on what is found, treatment may be carried out at the same appointment. This could include removing or dressing a damaged tooth, replacing a lost filling, re-cementing a crown, draining an abscess or extracting a tooth that cannot be saved. If more involved treatment is needed, your clinician will explain the options and arrange a follow-up appointment.
Your treatment plan
Once the immediate problem is dealt with, your clinician will discuss any further treatment needed and provide a written plan with costs before any additional work is agreed.

Yes, absolutely. Bone loss is one of the most common reasons patients are told implants are not possible, but it is not necessarily a permanent barrier to treatment. At Brunner Court, bone grafting and sinus lift procedures are available in-house, and Dr Nikhil has extensive experience treating patients with significant bone deficiencies who have been told elsewhere that implants cannot be placed. A free consultation will establish precisely what is achievable in your case.
