You are not alone
Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people avoid dental care. Some patients have had a bad experience in the past. Some have felt rushed, dismissed or not listened to. Some have simply built up a fear over many years that now feels impossible to get past.
Whatever has brought you to this page, we want you to know that nothing you tell us will come as a surprise, and nothing will make us judge you. We hear from patients every week who have not seen a dentist in five, ten or fifteen years. What they almost all have in common is that they feel embarrassed about it.
There is nothing to be embarrassed about. There is only the next step, and we are here to help you take it at whatever pace feels manageable.
How we work with nervous patients
We do not have a single approach to dental anxiety because dental anxiety is not a single thing. Some patients need more time. Some need more explanation. Some need to agree on a signal with their clinician that means stop. Some need sedation. Some just need to be treated like a human being rather than an appointment slot.
What we do in every case is listen first. Your first appointment is as much a conversation as it is a clinical visit. We will ask what worries you most, what has happened in the past and what would help you feel more comfortable. Treatment does not have to begin at the first appointment if you are not ready.
What you can expect at Brunner Court:
- A warm, unhurried welcome from the moment you arrive
- A clinician who will explain every step before they do anything
- The ability to stop at any point, no questions asked
- Clear, honest communication about what treatment involves and what it does not
- A team that will never make you feel guilty for avoiding the dentist or for being nervous
- Sedation available if you need a higher level of support
Who this page is for
Patients who have avoided the dentist for years
If you have not been to a dentist in a long time, you may be worried about what will be found, what it will cost or how you will be judged for the gap. None of those things will happen here. We will assess where things are, explain what we find in plain language and talk through your options without pressure.
Patients with a specific phobia
Some patients have a genuine phobia, a deep and persistent fear that goes beyond ordinary nervousness. Whether it is needles, the sounds, the smells or simply the loss of control, we understand and we are prepared. We can work very slowly, use numbing gel before any injection and take as many breaks as you need.
Patients who have had a bad experience elsewhere
A difficult previous experience can make the idea of going back to any dentist feel impossible. We hear this regularly. We cannot undo what happened before, but we can show you that it does not have to be that way.
Patients with additional needs
If you have a physical, sensory, cognitive or emotional condition that makes dental visits particularly difficult, please let us know when you call. We will make whatever adjustments we can to ensure your visit is as manageable as possible.
Am I suitable for treatment as a nervous patient?
Yes. Nervous patients are treated here every week. There is no level of anxiety that makes you unsuitable for care at Brunner Court. The only question is what level of support you need.
- Standard care with extra time and explanation suits most nervous patients who want to take things slowly and have full control throughout.
- Inhalation sedation (happy gas) uses a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen to create a calm, relaxed feeling during treatment. You remain conscious and able to communicate throughout, but the edge of anxiety is significantly reduced.
- IV or oral sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation for patients with significant phobia or those undergoing longer procedures. Sedation is available at Brunner Court and is discussed fully at your consultation before any decision is made. Full details are on our sedation dentistry page.
What happens at your first appointment?
A conversation before anything else
Your first appointment begins with a conversation, not a procedure. Your clinician will ask about your concerns, listen carefully and explain exactly what the appointment involves before anything happens. If you would prefer to just meet the team and see the practice before any clinical work, that is absolutely fine.
A gentle examination at your pace
When you are ready, your clinician will carry out a careful examination of your teeth and gums. You are in control throughout. If you need to stop, raise your hand and everything stops immediately.
A clear explanation of what was found
Your clinician will explain what they found in plain language, without alarming you unnecessarily. If treatment is needed, they will talk through the options clearly and honestly before anything is agreed.
A written treatment plan
If treatment is recommended, you will receive a written plan with full costs before you commit to anything. You are free to take it away and think about it for as long as you need.
Treatment at your pace
Treatment proceeds entirely at your pace. Appointments can be shorter if that helps. Breaks can be taken at any point. Your clinician will always tell you what they are about to do before they do it.
How much does treatment cost for nervous patients?
There is no additional charge for nervous patient care at Brunner Court. Treatment is priced at the same rates as for any other patient. A full written cost breakdown is always provided before any work begins.
Treatment | Fee |
New patient examination (incl. x-rays) | £85 |
