What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that use hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally occurring in the body, to restore volume beneath the skin, smooth deep lines and improve the contours of the face.

As we age, the face naturally loses volume. The fat pads beneath the skin thin, the bones beneath them gradually resorb and the skin loses some of its elasticity. The result is hollowing in certain areas, deepening lines around the mouth and a general change in facial proportions that makes the face look older and more tired than the person inside it feels.

Dermal fillers address this by replacing the lost volume beneath the skin in a controlled, precise way. The hyaluronic acid gel integrates with the surrounding tissue, attracts water and creates a natural-feeling fullness in the treated area. Unlike botulinum toxin, which works on the muscles, fillers work on the tissue itself.

The results are immediate, unlike anti-wrinkle treatment which develops over two weeks, and typically last between six and eighteen months depending on the product used, the area treated and individual factors such as metabolism and lifestyle.

Dermal filler treatments we offer

Marionette lines

Marionette lines are the creases that run from the corners of the mouth downward towards the chin. They take their name from the hinged jaw of a marionette puppet and can create a downturned, drawn or unhappy appearance even when the face is at rest. Filler placed carefully along the Marionette line lifts and softens the area, restoring a more neutral and rested expression. The result is subtle — the aim is to remove the appearance of age and fatigue rather than to change the fundamental character of the face.

Your clinician will discuss any additional areas of concern at your consultation and advise on whether treatment is clinically appropriate.

Am I a suitable candidate for dermal fillers?

Most healthy adults who want to address volume loss or deep lines are suitable candidates for dermal filler treatment. A full medical assessment is carried out at every consultation before any treatment is agreed.

Dermal fillers may be right for you if:

  • You are a healthy adult aged 18 or over
  • You have Marionette lines or other areas of volume loss you would like to address
  • You want a natural, subtle improvement in your appearance
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have realistic expectations about what injectable treatment can achieve

We would discuss your circumstances carefully if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding: Dermal filler treatment is not carried out during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • Have a history of severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis: A full allergy history is taken at your consultation. While hyaluronic acid fillers have a low allergy risk, this is an important part of your medical assessment.
  • Have had filler treatments elsewhere recently: Your clinician will take a full treatment history before proceeding to ensure the safe placement of any new product.
  • Have autoimmune conditions or take immunosuppressant medications: These need to be discussed carefully at consultation as they may affect treatment suitability or healing.
  • Have unrealistic expectations: Dermal fillers produce real and visible improvements but they are not a surgical procedure. Your clinician will give you an honest assessment of what treatment can achieve in your specific case.
"Nikhil took the time to explain everything in detail. I don't feel like I'm going to the dentist here. It's like catching up with friends."

What does dermal filler treatment involve?

1
Starting point

Consultation and medical assessment

Your appointment begins with a thorough consultation. Dimitris will take a full medical history, assess the areas you want to treat and discuss the most appropriate approach for your face. He will explain the expected results, the likely duration of effect and the potential side effects before any decision is made. There is no obligation to proceed at the consultation stage.

2
Before we begin

Consent

Full written consent is obtained before treatment begins. Dimitris will ensure you have a clear understanding of what the procedure involves, the products being used and what to expect afterwards.

3
Preparation

Preparation

The treatment area is cleaned and, where appropriate, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin before the injections begin. Most hyaluronic acid fillers also contain a small amount of local anaesthetic within the product itself, which makes the treatment more comfortable as it progresses.

4
The procedure

The treatment

Filler is administered using a fine needle or cannula, depending on the area being treated and the technique most appropriate for your case. The treatment typically takes between twenty and forty minutes. Results are visible immediately, though some swelling in the treated area is normal in the first day or two and the final result settles within one to two weeks.

5
Aftercare

Aftercare

Full written aftercare instructions are provided at the end of your appointment. In the hours following treatment you are advised to avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, extreme heat such as saunas and sun exposure, and touching or pressing on the treated areas. Your clinician will go through the full aftercare guidance with you before you leave.

6
The moment it all comes together

Review

A review appointment can be arranged two to four weeks after treatment if you would like the result assessed and any refinement discussed.

Frequently asked questions about dermal fillers in Northwich

At Brunner Court, dermal filler treatment for Marionette lines starts from £250. The fee includes the consultation and the treatment itself. A full written breakdown is provided before treatment begins. Call 01606 44394 or book online to arrange a consultation.

Dermal filler results typically last between six and eighteen months depending on the product used, the area treated and individual factors such as metabolism and lifestyle. Marionette line filler tends to last towards the longer end of this range as the area is not subject to the same degree of repeated muscle movement as areas treated with botulinum toxin. Your clinician will give you a realistic expectation of duration at your consultation.

Yes, when carried out by a trained clinician with a thorough understanding of facial anatomy and a rigorous medical assessment process. At Brunner Court, dermal filler treatment is carried out by Dimitris Mataras (GDC: 180398), who has specific training through the Dr Hennessy Academy. The products used are regulated hyaluronic acid fillers. Side effects are generally mild and temporary, including swelling, redness or minor bruising at the injection sites, which resolves within a few days for most patients.

Most patients can return to normal activities immediately after treatment. Mild swelling and redness at the injection sites is common on the day of treatment and may persist for a day or two. Bruising can occasionally occur and may take up to a week to resolve. You are advised to avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, extreme heat and direct sun exposure for the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours after treatment. Most patients find they can go about their normal day without anyone noticing they have had treatment.

Anti-wrinkle injections use botulinum toxin to relax the muscles responsible for expression lines, reducing their appearance over ten to fourteen days. Dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid to physically restore volume and smooth lines by filling the tissue beneath the skin. Results from fillers are visible immediately. The two treatments work in different ways and are often used in combination to address different aspects of facial ageing. Your clinician will advise on the most appropriate approach for your specific concerns at consultation.
